Chapter Five
Hermes hovered in the darkened dining room where he'd hidden, shifting from one foot to the other and back again. Save Hybris and beat Theron to a bloody pulp, or grab the syrinx, help Artemis do whatever she was trying to do, and then return to beat Theron to a bloody pulp while hoping Hybris could handle herself in the meantime? Neither was altogether appealing except the beating Theron to a bloody pulp part.
"What's taking so long?"
He shot into the air, spinning around. Artemis had her arms crossed and was daring to glare at him. "If you could just pop in here whenever you liked, why did you ask me to do this for you?" Hermes landed on his feet stalked back into the study, unlocking the box and retrieving the syrinx.
When he turned, Artemis stood beside him, except she was kind of translucent. "I'm not really here, idiot. You're only seeing me with your mind. Meet me in the Black Forest. You know where." She disappeared, and he cursed under his breath. He took one last lingering look in the direction Theron had disappeared to with his woman.
Hermes cringed. She wasn't his woman. Hadn't been for a long time, no matter that they'd had the most satisfying angry sex a few months before. No matter that he wanted a repeat and would never have it because she'd baited him by swearing she would reject him if he tried.
Regardless of whether or not he could call her his, Theron was dangerous, unpredictable, and violent. Hermes would be back to ensure Hybris survived the encounter. He'd give Artemis five minutes, tops.
Flashing to a clearing into the middle of the Black Forest in Germany literally took seconds, but felt like a century. He would be happy to fly again at super speeds once he could bid adieu to sneaking in and out of Dionysus' house. "Fuck. The cameras!"
Dionysus would see Hy carting Calix out of there, and she didn't need to be added to that god's list of people for him to harass in the future. Hermes glanced down at the syrinx. Returning it would prove difficult and idiotic, but he had no choice.
He'd put back the syrinx, if only to rearrange Theron's face and possibly castrate him. Hey! If regenerating Xylon's bits with magic doesn't work, maybe I could surgically transfer Theron's to him. Would serve the satyr right.
The clearing was a favored spot of Artemis, and Hermes used to find her here hunting and taking a breather from Olympus back in the olden days. Artemis appeared with Xylon at her side. With his centaur body, he was a few feet taller than she was.
"Artemis..." The centaur frowned at Hermes. "What is going on?" His copper hair and pelt looked black in the dark, and then his gaze dropped to the syrinx.
"Yeah," Hermes tacked on dryly. "Tell him what you're up to." It was only fair to give the guy a chance to consent to this craziness.
Artemis fidgeted with her silky white robes.
